The Garda Cricket Club got it Taverners Season underway on Friday 16th May at Phoenix C.C. The weather was warm and the sun was keeping everyone happy. Peter Flood and Jimmy Sharma were making their first appearances for the G.C.C.
The match was played over 15 x 8 ball overs and Phoenix C.C. batted first, Damien Gilmore and Jimmy opened the bowling and the G.C.C. were unlucky not to take any wickets. The G.C.C. bowlers who followed kept things very tight and could have had some success but for some catches that were dropped in the deep. Dominic Berry did manage to take the first catch of the season and later Damien managed to get his first victim. The bowling of Peter Flood and Adam Darnell showed that the G.C.C. bowling attack has some great strength in depth. Phoenix C.C. managed to get 110 runs in their 15 overs.
Tom Moore and Pauli Corray opened the batting for the G.C.C., but after a strong start the wickets started to fall. The Batting of Ollie Claffey and Jimmy (both of whom retired not out) got the G.C.C. back into the game. This left the last two batman Damien Gilmore and Marcus Hand a chance to win the game and thankfully with a few boundaries and some quick singles, Damien managed to hit the winning runs with four balls to spare.
The win was a great start to the season and hopefully we can be as successful throughout the season.
Phoenix C.C. decided that Marcus Hand hadn’t enough wine in his collection and made him Man of the Match.
Match against Dalkey on the 20/05/08 had to cancelled, hopefully was can rearrange the fixture for later in the summer.
